SUV and 4x4 hire on the Costa del Sol
On this coast an SUV is not a style choice, it is an answer to the terrain. The hillside estates — La Zagaleta, Sierra Blanca, El Paraíso, Elviria Alta — are reached up long ramps with high speed bumps, and most villas have a sloped driveway. A low car scrapes; an SUV does not.
Where the difference shows
The climbs to Benahavís and Casares, the entrances to gated estates, and the tracks to the bodegas of Manilva and Ronda. None of it demands four-wheel drive, but all of it demands ground clearance.
Seven seats when you need them
The Mercedes GLS and BMW X7 carry seven adults for real, not on paper. The logical pick when two families arrive and want one car.
Size versus old towns
Big has a cost: in Marbella old town, Mijas Pueblo or Frigiliana a GLS means manoeuvring. If white villages are the plan, a Macan or GLC works better.

Frequently asked questions
Which SUVs are available?
Range Rover Evoque, Audi SQ5, Mercedes GLC, two Porsche Macans, BMW X5, BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, Audi RS Q8, Porsche Cayenne and the Mercedes-AMG G 63.
Which is the cheapest?
The Range Rover Evoque, from €70/day on rentals over a week and €150 for one or two days.
Which do you recommend for the hills?
A Macan, an SQ5 or an X5: enough clearance for the ramps and still manageable in an old town.
Do they have four-wheel drive?
Most do, though on the Costa del Sol it is rarely needed. What matters here is ground clearance and approach angle.
What mileage is included?
Between 150 and 200 km a day depending on the model. Ronda and back from Marbella is about 200 km, so tell us if you plan to repeat it.
